Tailor Made for a Small Room... how's that for a band name? In these seemingly modern times, when most bands opt for "The", followed by the weirdest noun they can come up with (The Loving Oven, anyone?), it's kind of refreshing to come across a band whose name not only breaks with dull convention, but also sums up their style and sound succinctly, endearingly, and with a touch of poetry thrown in for good measure.
Tailor Made for a Small Room (hereafter known as TMFASR, if only to save my tiring fingers) live up to their name in every way. Being a partnership from Tokyo (the city of stacked rabbit hutches) the duo are contained enough to fit comfortably into a 1LDK. Being a largely electronic outfit, their instrumentation needs are minimal. "Pleasant Hill," the track they've donated to TADA this month, is conjured out of the most basic keyboard/ vocal/ acoustic guitar setup, manipulated by a space-saving laptop. Yes, you could safely say that you'd barely notice their physical presence anywhere other than in a matchbox.
It also helps that members Ayumu & Miwa are involved on a more personal level. Effectively, they could stay in their small room forever, though the fact that they both front better-known bands may cause difficulties. Their sound amalgamates the best from both 4 Bonjour's Parties (Ayumu) and Lost in Found (Miwa), mixing it together in a much more minimal and intimate style (unsurprising, considering that neither 4 Bon nor Lost are going to fit into anything smaller than a village hall).
The track we're featuring with this preview is the first original song to escape from their sleepy hollow. "Pleasant Hill" shares a lot with the sounds made by 4 Bonjour's Parties, differing only in that it is much more stripped down in construction, and that anyone familiar with the work of Miwa's band will recognize those vocals instantly. There's a real sense of late-60s psychedelia surrounding Ayumu's work. He effortlessly incorporates the atmosphere of classics such as Piper at the Gates of Dawn, or The Beatles' Across the Universe, instinctively knowing what sounds are required to give the genre a modern makeover. Not bad for a kid from Saitama, yet to see his 28th birthday.
TMFASR have their first gig at Grapefruit Moon, Sangenjaya (Tokyo) on June 24th, where they'll open for Celine and Gutevolk. In the meantime, find yourself a small space and click HERE to download their first release.
